Meal Description
As we prepare to celebrate our Nation’s birth next week, we thought it would be felicitous to celebrate with some of the favorite foods of certain presidents.
A strong flavored fish is a perfect match to this American General. “No
terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted,” Grant
famously responded to Confederate General John Floyd requesting to surrender
Ft. Donelson, Tennessee in 1862, giving him the nickname, “Unconditional
Surrender.”
But, Grant had a tender side:
“I don't believe any man and wife were ever more devoted than were the President and Mrs. Grant. I am sure he thought she was absolutely perfect….He wouldn't sit down to the table without her. [They were] inseparables and never thought of eating a meal without the other. The breakfast, as a rule, was plain - broiled Spanish mackerel, steak, bacon and fried apples (a favorite dish), and rolls, flannel cakes or buckwheat cakes, and a cup of strong coffee.” - Crook, William H. Through Five Administrations. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1910…and, Strong Coffee means....Whiskey!
Ah, L’Amour. We have decided to alter the recipe slightly as not many probably want to eat Spanish Mackerel
for Breakfast (although BFD….Breakfast For Dinner….may be coming soon!). We have taken a Spanish variant on this dish,
which is served with traditional Spanish accompaniments such as Serrano Ham and
Pequilo Peppers. The preserved Lemons provide a unique texture and flavor for
the dish, as the entire lemon is edible, including the rind. The Parsley Root puree finishes the dish. We
also will be providing a Gazpacho as an Add-on.
